Researchers say that while IQ is our ticket to get in the game, Emotional Intelligence is what will distinguish us as exceptional leaders.

The five elements of Emotional Intelligence:

 

– Emotional self-awareness

 

– Emotional control

 

– Self-motivation

 

– Empathy. Understanding the emotions of others

 

– Relationship management, based on empathy, trust, and respect

Cultivating your Emotional Intelligence

 

Developing our Emotional Intelligence requires learning the underlying concepts of this domain, and then practicing over an extended period of time, until the skills and behaviors become a part of our “natural self”.

 

1. Emotional self-awareness. Becoming aware of what we feel at any moment, what triggered our emotion, how did we regulate our emotion, and how did we express our emotion.

 

2. Emotional regulation. Learning to regulate the effect of negative emotions and capitalize on the benefit of positive emotions.

 

3. Self-motivation. Using self-management strategies to motivate ourselves to achieve long and short-term demanding goals.

 

4. Empathy. Recognizing, understanding, and being attuned to the emotions of others, especially our family and friends, and the people we work with.

 

5. Managing relationships. Based on empathy, trust, and respect so as to produce positive outcomes for the organization and the individual.
