7. Build high-performing teams

Build high-performing teams

Bill Gates once said that without the brilliant minds and boundless energy of 20 of its early employees, Microsoft would not be the successful company it had become.

Your success as a leader depends mainly on your ability to hire, develop, and inspire a team of highly talented and committed employees.

Do not compromise on hiring anyone but the best employees you can find. It is a lot easier to compromise on hiring a “good enough” employee than to fire one who turned out to be a mediocre performer.

Once they’ve joined your team, be sure to invest in their professional development, to equip them with everything they need to do their job, and to inspire them to be the best they can possibly be.

Build high-performing teams

Below are some important steps you can take to ensure you have the best team possible.

1.   Start by envisioning the kind of team you’d like to lead: the team culture, values, and behaviors, the work ethics and commitment, their specific skills and experience, the organization structure, and the specific roles and responsibilities of each team member.

2.   Map your existing team to your envisioned one, identify any gaps, and figure out ways to address them. If you need to hire new team members, think carefully about the type of person you need, and the process you will use to select the most talented team members possible.

3.   Research and design the most creative and impactful methods for developing the professional capabilities of your team. Determine the best approach for assessing your team members’ performance, for providing them the most meaningful feedback, and for tailoring their specific development plan.

4.   Most importantly, and perhaps the most challenging, figure out how you will inspire and motivate your team to be the best they can be and to deliver the outcomes expected of them.

5.   And last, determine in advance how you will handle employees who are not performing at the level expected of them. It is better to have researched and thought this through than to improvise  and address this challenge “on the fly”.

In this module you will learn how to:

a.   Envision the kind of team you want to have

b.   Hire the most talented and committed team possible

c.   Develop your team’s professional capabilities

d.   Inspire and motivate your team to perform at their peak

e.   Handle under-performing or challenging employees
