What is the role of the Executive
Coach in the current turbulent economic time?
I found my answer to this question in the March 2009 issue of the Harvard Business Review (HBR).
In their article Learning From Heroes, Jack Covert and Todd Sattersten wrote about their survey of the best business
books from the last 30 years. Five management challenges have emerged again and again:
- Find a clear purpose
- Be aware of past experiences
- Maintain a bias towards action
- Be open
to change
- Seek feedback.

Even in the most challenging of situations, I believe that the answer is within you. My role as an executive coach
is to help you reveal it. I’ll be your impartial confidant, sounding board, and if necessary, a reflective challenger.
I will partner with you to clearly define the core issue, bring out the Big Ideas from within you, work through the possibilities,
and determine the most effective course of action. Together we will find strategies to “sell” your ideas in a
manner that will positively resonate with your executive colleagues. And finally, I will help you find ways to overcome any
obstacle that might arise on the road to implement your vision.
Leadership Skills
On a different level, you may wish me to work with you on developing your leadership skills.
In his 2003 article
What Makes A Leader? Daniel Goleman describes the five most important Emotional Intelligence leadership
attributes:
- Self-awareness:
Self-confidence, Realistic self-assessment, and Self-deprecating sense of humor.
- Self-regulation:
Trustworthiness and integrity, Comfort with ambiguity, and Openness to change.
- Motivation:
Strong drive to achieve, Optimism even in the face of failure, and Organizational commitment.
- Empathy: Expertise in building and retaining talent, Cross-cultural sensitivity, and Service to customers.
- Social Skill: Effectiveness in leading change, Persuasiveness, and Expertise in building
and leading teams.
Fundamentally, I believe in my clients and I have a great
respect for their will to grow and develop as individuals and as business leaders. As your partner coach, I will help you define
the leadership skills you wish to develop, and work with you until your desired improvement is achieved.
